On 24th March the Giverny Impressionisms Museum opened its doors to greet you to the 2017 season which will be marked with lots of new events and as always offering more Impressionist Art and cultural entertainment. This year’s first temporary exhibition which has been on show since the Museum re-opened, entitled “Tintamarre : musical instruments in Art from 1860 to 1910”,  sweeps you back into the musical world of the Impressionist era.

You have up until 2nd July to discover a selection of paintings which depict the presence of music and instruments in scenes from daily life during the golden age of Impressionism, that is, from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th. It is an opportunity to learn more about the way pictoral art and music were intricately linked, as music’s new popularity and style inspired many artists in so far as they began to represent in their work tastes and amusement which characterized the era, such as fanfares, cabarets, orchestras, music lessons and salon music.

It is an opportunity to admire, amongst others, works such as Edouard Manet’s La Leçon de musique (1870), Edgar Degas’s Mademoiselle Dihau au piano (1869-1872) or Gustave Caillebotte’s La Leçon de piano (1881). A great number of the paintings displayed have been borrowed from the famous Parisian museums such as Le Musée d’Orsay  and Le Musée Marmottan, the result of  which is a really exceptional exhibition!

On parallel with this exhibition, the Giverny Impressionisms Museum would also like to invite you to listen to ‘the musicians at the museum’, a group of musicians who are performing two Saturdays a month in April, May and June to put the spotlight on the history of certain instruments and their repertoire.
