An emblem of the town Les Andelys, Château-Gaillard has also become symbolic of the Seine Normandy Borough since the beginning of 2017. To mark the occasion the Seine Normandie Agglomération Tourist Office would like to invite you to discover Chateau-Gaillard and its secrets as from 1st April when the former fortress becomes open to the public.

Erected in record time by Richard the Lionheart, King of England and Duke of Normandy in 1196 in order to protect both the River Seine and Rouen was often a witness of the sieges which took place during the Hundred Years War. The majestic remains of Chateau-Gaillard continue to watch over from the cliff top and have inspired the English Romantic movement, the Impressionist painters as well as both contemporary writers and poets. The Château was classed a National Heritage site in 1862.

Apart from being important historically, artistically and from an architectural point of view, Château Gaillard is also reputed for its ecological significance, as it is classed amongst the French recognized Natural Zones of Ecological Interest, Fauna and Flaura as well as being part of the Natura 2000 program.

2017 Events Program

The 2017 Château’s cultural and family events program offers the opportunity to step into another age because this year medieval camps have been set up and there is also falconry on the agenda. The scheduled nature outings are also a way to see the fortress from a different angle: during the walks and hikes designed to sensitize the public, a special emphasis is placed on both animal and plant life.
